Next Generation Computing for Computational Engineering
New computing technologies, such as quantum computing or neuromorphic computing, promise to deliver unprecedented speed and scaling for scientific-technical applications. In fact, the expected leaps in performance for suitable applications could enable new and groundbreaking opportunities for computational engineering research and materials design. However, systems with such technologies are not yet in production. Members of the Profile Area MSS approach the resulting research challenges in two general ways. First, their fundamental research provides the basis for quantum and neuromorphic building blocks of these machines. And second, they prepare numerical and AI models, algorithms, and simulation codes, to be ready for when the new computing technologies will become available.
