The profile area Computational Science & Engineering (CompSE) has been restructured, the content has been refocused and the profile area has been renamed Modeling & Simulation Sciences (MSS).
The main focus of the renamed profile area is computational life sciences e.g. on predictive hierarchical simulation (PHS). PHS is based on hierarchies of physical and data-driven models, from molecular and cellular levels to organs, patients, and patient cohorts. PHS enables reliable and efficient selection and adaptation of simulation models and methods for relevant clinical objectives.
Also in the focus of the profile area MSS are machine learning, which - whether in artificial intelligence or autonomous driving - is becoming more and more important, as well as high and supercomputing (HPC), which hardly any scientific discipline can be imagined without. With CLAIX, RWTH Aachen University has one of the most powerful university HPC systems in Germany. In addition, the MSS profile area conducts research on the further development of quantum computing for various applications such as chemistry, physics and engineering sciences and creates initiatives for sustainable software development.
The close integration of the profile area with the JARA Center for Simulation and Data Science (JARA CSD) creates synergies and drives advanced research.
